Iron Responsive Thrombocytopenia

Abstract
Recent experimental and clinical studies have provided evidence that iron has a role in the regulation of thrombopoiesis (1). Gross, Keffer, and Newman (2), studying 60 iron-deficient infants, noted the occurrence of thrombocytopenia and thrombocytosis. Both groups responded with a rise in platelet count, independent of hemoglobin level, after iron therapy. With further administration of iron, the platelet count stabilized at a normal level. In 1974, two cases have been reported that describe iron deficiency and thrombocytopenia corrected by parenteral iron administration (3, 4).
