Abstract
Jejunal pH was measured by radiotelemetering in control subjects, and in patients with chronic duodenal ulcer (before and after vagotomy), gastric ulcer, and pernicious anaemia. Patients with reduced gastric acid secretion (gastric ulcer and post-vagotomy subjects) and achlorhydria had significantly higher jejunal pH than controls, and a much more stable pH record. There was no difference between duodenal ulcer patients and controls in the form of the pH record or in the lowest and highest spontaneous pH levels achieved, but the overall mean pH as measured by the time spent at and above pH 6 was higher in the duodenal ulcer group. Keywords
