Childbirth Pain Relieved by Combined Paracervical and Pudendal Nerve Blocks

Abstract
Regional anesthesia by paracervical and pudendal nerve block was administered transvaginally in 208 women during parturition. Childbirth pain was relieved when 1% mepivacaine hydrochloride was bilaterally injected. Pain relief was rated as excellent in 150 parturients (72.1%) and good in 51 (24.5%). These procedures are simplified when the anesthetic agent is delivered to the target area by an instrument that sheathes the needle point. Intravascular administration must be avoided by attempting aspiration before each injection of anesthetic, and the injections are not given simultaneously but are timed (staggered) by allowing two uterine contractions between injections.
