Ozone Measurements in the Mesosphere During The Solar Proton Event of 2 November 1969

Abstract
Two Sidewinder—H.V. Arcas rockets were instrumented to measure the ozone distribution during the initial and final phases of a solar proton event. The measurements were obtained by the technique of solar absorption spectroscopy and covered the altitude range 51–80 km. The ozone distribution of 4 November 1969 is significantly less than typical mid-latitude data, but lies generally within the range of other high-latitude observations. Current photochemical-transport models are found to overestimate ozone but approach agreement with the data at higher altitudes. During the initial phase of the disturbance on 2 November 1969 the ozone concentration is found to be significantly less at all altitudes. The change amounts to a factor of 2 at 54 km, 3 at 60 km, and 4 at 67 km. The pronounced decrease in ozone is believed to result from the particle precipitation.
