BILATERAL CAROTID BODY TUMORS

Abstract
A case of bilateral carotid body tumors is reported with discussion of the pathology and the angiographic findings. The heredofamilial predisposition of these tumors, especially in association with bilaterality, is discussed.Carotid body tumors are rare and may not be considered in the differential diagnosis of lateral neck masses; however, several clinical findings should suggest their presence. If a carotid body tumor is suspected, arteriography should be performed, preferably by the femoral route, not only to study the side of the suspected tumor, but also to study the contralateral carotid and cerebral circulation for patency, and to detect small contralateral carotid body tumors which are not suspected.
