Abstract
A method is described for measuring the diffusion coefficients of electrolytes in dilute solution by a development of the open-ended capillary technique. Two vertical capillaries are used, each closed at one end by a platinum electrode and positioned one above the other with the open ends separated by a distance of about 1.0 cm. The upper and lower tubes are initially filled with solutions of concentration text-decoration:overline c(1–δ) and text-decoration:overline c(1 +δ) respectively, where δ lies in the range 0.05 to 0.25, and are surrounded with solution of concentration text-decoration:overline c. Diffusion is followed by measuring the ratio of resistance of the upper and lower tubes by an alternating current transformer bridge. Tests with LiCl, KCl (0.1 and 0.01 N) and HCl give results in good agreement with those of Harned and his co-workers.
