Abstract
This chapter argues that the intellectual dominance of the Western model has derived not from its inherent and unequivocal superiority but rather from the political dominance of those who believe in its superiority. It suggests that evolution of theories of modernization is the outcome of a continuous process of challenge and response. It also explains that the legitimization of the Western model has succeeded so well that social progress has come to be defined in terms of the modernization project. Keywords
