Abstract
There are two main types of viviparity in fishes. In both types the ova are fertilized within the ovarian follicles. In the 1st type the embryos are retained within the ovarian follicles during gestation and the follicles become modified. In the 2d type the embryos are expelled at an early stage into the ovarian cavity and the period of gestation is passed in this location. The period of gestation may be long or short and the embryos may be born in a late or an early stage of development. There is considerable variation in the different types of viviparity in the sequence of fertilization, ovulation, hatching, site and length of the period of the retention of embryos and birth. Since some of the phases of reproduction are under hormone control a considerable diversity in the time and the amt. of the production of various hormones is indicated. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
