ON THE MODE OF ACTION OF IODOTHIOURACIL

Abstract
Admn. to rats of iodothiouracil, mixed in the diet, 1% or 3% concn., after 10 days resulted in more than 2-fold thyroid enlargement, increased thyroid vascularity, increased cell height, discharge of colloid, and a many-fold increase in the iodide space. The iodide-accumulating mechanism was flooded by iodothiouracil. Observations were interpreted as indicating that iodothiouracil acts in the rat to increase thyrotropic hormone elaboration and thus to result in goiter formation; no support for the concept that iodothiouracil has a unique mode of action was found in this study.
