Hemolytic-uremic syndrome in children

Abstract
Eating meat or other food contaminated with Escherichia coli 0157: H7 or certain other organisms may cause hemorrhagic colitis. This condition progresses to hemolytic-uremic syndrome in 5% to 10% of affected children and can be very severe. The authors describe how to follow a child who has episodes of bloody diarrhea to identify early signs of hemolytic-uremic syndrome. They also summarize how to treat these children in the hospital if the syndrome develops.
