SEVERE TOXIC REACTIONS ASSOCIATED WITH SULFAMETHOXYPYRIDAZINE (KYNEX)

Abstract
Several cases of severe reactions associated with sulfamethoxypyridazine, including one death, having been observed and are reported. The clinical picture in the most severe cases met the criteria for the diagnosis of Stevens-Johnson syndrome. In the fatal case, autopsy findings failed to reveal any of the characteristic microscopic findings which have previously been described in association with the administration of sulfonamides. Sulfamethoxypyridazine, although of valuable therapeutic effect because of its adequate and sustained antibacterial levels, may be associated with untoward reactions involving a multiplicity of systems. Among these are the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, and the respiratory, the hematopoetic, and possibly the central nervous systems.
