Two roles of ecologists in defining and determining the acceptability of environmental impacts

Abstract
A framework is presented for defining the environmental impact of a project on an ecosystem. An 8‐step decision tree is introduced which leads to operational definitions of unacceptable and acceptable impacts. Within this framework, two roles ecologists play in the field of environmental impact assessment are considered: (1) To supply scientifically sound and objective predictions of the potential impact of a project on an ecosystem, and (2) to reach conclusions, based on his own value system, concerning the acceptability of the predicted impact.
