Abstract
It was found that m-cresol was not a satisfactory GPC solvent for nylon 6 and a novel mixed solvent system has been devised. The use of this solvent avoids degradation of the polymer and ‘absorption’ effects. Using the method developed good agreement was obtained between number average molecular weights determined by GPC and by end group determinations. The molecular weight distribution for nylon 6 theoretically predicted by Flory has been confirmed rather than the narrower distributions reported by other authors. The variation of distribution with polymerization time has also been studied.
