Abstract
Skid Row is a vanishing social system with a declining population of deviants, now predominantly of older Whites and young Negroes and a rising rate of both violent internal crime and alcoholism. In spite of the old stereotypes, only one-third were alcoholics; one-third were abstainers; but in the newer population alcoholics predominate. The changes will affect the caretakers who deal with homeless alcoholics both on and off Skid Row.
