Abstract
On the basis of a variational scheme for a trial wave function given as an expansion of the exact solutions of the three-dimensional isotropic harmonic oscillator, we have calculated the energies for the 14 lowest energy states of a hydrogen atom in the presence of magnetic fields ranging from approximately to G. We also discuss the connection between the low- and high-field energy spectra based upon the noncrossing rule.
