Abstract
This essay stresses the importance of viewing psychological theories in terms of the socioeconomic environment in which they exist. Specifically, we examine the relationship between the humanistic psychology of Abraham Maslow and the economic practices of American society. We find that Maslow's contradictions-the most significant being that his work contains both democratic and elitist worldviews-are understandable when viewed as expressions of capitalistic ideology. Keywords
