Abstract
The acute toxicity of ochratoxin A and its derivatives in day-old chicks has been studied. The LD50 was 166 and 216 μg per assay for ochratoxins A and C, respectively. No toxic effect was demonstrated when chicks were fed with up to 500 μg/chick of the hydrolyzed product, i.e., dihydroisocoumarin. Based on the results reported, the day-old chick assay is valid as a confirmatory test for ochratoxin. Keywords
