BIOASSAY OF THE PITUITARY GROWTH HORMONE. WIDTH OF THE PROXIMAL EPIPHYSIAL CARTILAE OF THE TIBIA IN HYPOPHYSECTOMI2ED RATS1,2

Abstract
A method is described for quantitative detn. of the pituitary growth hormone in the hypophysectomized rat, using as the criterion the width of the uncalcified cartilage of the proximal epiphysis of the rat''s tibia. The relation between the logarithm of the dosage and the response of the cartilage could be represented, within a limited range of doses, by a straight line. The accuracy of the method was detd. and a growth hormone unit was defined. The bone test is approx. 3 times as sensitive as the body wt. method (on the basis of the daily dose), and requires 4/15 of the time and about 1/11 of the quantity of hormone necessary for a corresponding response in the body wt. method.
