Sensory generalization with voluntary reactions.

Abstract
A generalization gradient such as is found in the typical conditioned reflex situation was shown to occur with voluntary verbal reactions. The stimulus dimension which yielded the gradient was a series of vibratory stimuli placed at varying distances on the skin. Practice was given in responding to a designated stimulus, after which 3 "prohibited" stimuli were interspersed at random intervals among trials with the designated one. Degree of generalization was indicated by number of responses made to the prohibited stimuli. Generalization was apparently a function of symmetry, as well as proximity to the designated stimulus. Various effects of voluntary inhibition were apparent in the reaction times.
