Abstract
Evidence is presented concerning the role of 2 genes, G1 and G2, in galactose utilization by Saccharomyces haploids. It is suggested as a working hypothesis that G1 controls the formation of an enzyme required for the conversion of galactose to glucose-6-PO4, and that G2 is involved in the transport of galactose into the cell. The delayed fermentation of galactose exhibited by certain of our clones is considered in relation to similar phenomena described by previous workers for other Saccharomvces strains. Keywords
