Abstract
An early analysis of whispering-gallery modes due to Lord Rayleigh (J. W. Strutt) is extended to cylindrical geometry where the axial wave number h is nonzero. The model is an infinitely long homogeneous fluid cylinder surrounded by another homogeneous fluid with differing properties. It is shown that the modes are leaky if the external wave number k2 > h even where there is no dissipation. An expression is derived for the circumferential attenuation rate in this case. It is also demonstrated that there is no attenuation when h > k2 provided the media are lossless.
