On the basis of information gained from drilling and geophysical (mainly seismic) surveys in the Camargue region, southern France, the extent of upper Miocene (Pontian) erosion and lower Pliocene (Plaisancian) deposition has been established, and the Pontian drainage pattern of the region plotted. Both erosion and subsequent marine invasion occurred very rapidly.
