Determination of the optical counterpart of LMC X-1

Abstract
The X-ray position of LMC X-1, derived from multiple ROSAT-HRI observations, confirms that the optical counterpart is a peculiar O7 III star, known as #32 (Cowley et al. 1978). This resolves a long standing uncertainty whether this star or the nearby supergiant R148 is associated with LMC X-1.Keywords
