The Verbalizer-Visualizer Questionnaire: Further Normative Data

Abstract
The Verbalizer-Visualizer Questionnaire is a 15-item questionnaire which measures individual differences on a verbalizer-visualizer dimension of cognitive style; it assesses the extent to which one''s thinking processes consist of words or self verbalizations vs. pictorial or visual images. This report provides some normative data for the Verbalizer-Visualizer Questionnaire for a sample of junior high school students. The questionnaire was administered at post and follow-up assessments to 53 junior high students in a program to reduce interpersonal anxiety. While reliability was lower, the Verbalizer-Visualizer Questionnaire proved useful in discriminating between subjects who responded favorably and those who responded less favorably to a rational-emotive therapy treatment. More specifically, habitual verbalizers (those who scored less than 7) responded significantly better than those who scored in the mid-range or toward the visualizer extreme. These findings support exploration of the psychometric properties and research uses of this questionnaire.
