To the Editor: Great interest has been aroused by the discovery of the putative natriuretic hormone atrial natriuretic peptide.1 However, the circulating concentrations of many hormones are subject to diurnal variation. Care must be taken to make allowance for such physiologic changes in any studies in which they are measured. Many groups have developed plasma assays for atrial natriuretic peptide and have measured its concentration in physiologic and disease states, yet virtually nothing is known of the normal variation in its circulating concentration.
