Abstract
Previous experimental work has demonstrated strong laser action on the ionized lines of argon and xenon in pinch discharges in these gases. This laser action is correlated in time with the minimum contraction of the discharge. The laser output power, however, was found to saturate with bank voltage, and to be maximized at a critical initial filling pressure. These phenomena, obtained empirically in the initial work, can be shown to be the consequences of a generalized impedance matching problem, and hence correspond to the optimization of the transfer of stored bank energy to the pinched plasma. Thus, rational scaling laws can be derived for this type of laser. Keywords
