Early Scale Development in the White Crappie

Abstract
Scale formation on white crappies (Pomoxis annularis Rafinesque) from Lewis and Clark Lake, a mainstem Missouri River reservoir, first occurred in the 16-19 mm length range. Initial scale pockets appeared on the caudal peduncle and were formed progressively anterior and ventral to the lateral line with the growth of the fish. Imbrication of scales began on fish 22 to 24 mm long, with the first fully scaled fish observed at 27 mm.
