Abstract
The main advances in the title area are reviewed with emphasis on catalytic alkane functionalization, both organometallic and bioinorganic. Current challenges are discussed. A tunable, selective hydrocarbon functionalization is still out of reach and resolving mechanistic problems has proved particularly challenging. Keywords
