Abstract
A list of chromosome numbers for 15 spp. [P. abbottae, P. brumalis, P. fucicola, P. kanakaensis, P. lanceolata, P. miniata, P. nereocystis, P. papenfussii, P. perforata, P. pseudolanceolata, P. sanjuanensis, P. schizophylla, P. smithii, P. torta and P. variegata] of Porphyra from the west coast of North America is presented. The basic haploid number found in vegetative cells of the foliose thallus and beta-spores is 3, although numbers from 2 to 5 are found in some species. Diploid chromosome numbers were determined during divisions leading to alpha-spore formation in 4 spp. Chromosome numbers were recorded for the vegetative cells of the conchocelis phase of 7 spp; 4 are haploid and 3 diploid. Implications of these data in systematics are discussed. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
