Abstract
Creation of large esophageal suture line defects in dogs resulted in postoperative death of 80% of the control animals. Immediate repair of such defects with a patch of adjacent pleural surface of lung was followed by recovery of 90% of the animals. When lung patch repair of esophageal defects was delayed 6 hours after creation of the defects all of the animals survived, but when this repair was delayed 24 hours no animal survived. Keywords
