Infrared spectra of alkyl tri(methyl/[2H3]methyl) ammonium iodides. Characteristic rocking vibrations of —N+(CH3)3group at 970–910 cm–1

Abstract
Multiple strong absorptions in the region 970–910 cm–1 have been found to be characteristic of —N+(CH3)3 group. From a study of the CD3 analogues of RN(CH3)+ 3I, where R = methyl, butyl and hexyl and earlier work with R = aryl, it has been established that these absorptions arise mainly from CH3 rocking modes and not skeletal modes as usually believed.
