Abstract
A novel method for designing at gradient coil using a genetic algorithm is presented; the ease of construction of the set is implicitly incorporated into the optimization process. A z gradient set designed for human brain imaging in which the coil length and diameter are similar is found to have improved linearity compared with the standard Maxwell pair design. Keywords
