Studies on Human Leukemia.

Abstract
Electron microscope studies of ultrathin sections of lymph nodes from patients with different forms of leukemia have revealed the presence of virus particles in 3 out of 6 cases of acute lymphatic, in the 1 case of acute myeloid leukemia, and in 1 out of 3 cases of lymphosarcoma. They have not been observed in 1 case of chronic monocytic leukemia examined. In all cases the particles were of 900 A diameter and showed similar structure. Similar studies failed to reveal virus particles in lymph nodes from 5 non-leukemic patients. Cytopathogenic changes were observed in direct cell cultures of lymph nodes from 15 out of 24 patients with leukemia and lymphosarcoma. Similar cultures from 4 non-leukemic patients showed no changes. In one case of lymphosarcoma, virus particles were seen not only in the biopsy specimen but also in cells of this specimen grown in tissue culture for 6 sequential passages and which had shown cytopathogenic changes.
