Abstract
Tertiary sedimentation in the Belgium basin began with the Montian. The Heersian is retained as a separate stage to include provisionally the Gelinden marls and the Infraheersian. This recommendation is based on the unique paleontologic character of the stage and its complete separation from the overlying Landenian shales. The Eocene developed to its greatest extent during the Landenian with the successive deposition of shales, silts, tuff, sands, marls and lignites. The Ypresian-Landenian boundary is defined by the first appearance of marine facies above Landenian fluviomarine deposits. The Panisilian may need revision as it now includes Nummulites planulatus. The hiatus between the overlying Bruxellian and the Ledian is not as significant as first thought since the Ledian is correlated with upper Lutetian in the Paris basin. The Bartonian immediately succeeds the Ledian. The Tongrian in northern Belgium is not a lateral equivalent of the Bartonian. Keywords
