Abstract
A comparison of the gas flow proportional counter and the Si(Li) solid-state detector is made. Currently the flow proportional counter provides a means of extending the range of energy dispersive analysis to the region below 1 keV. It also can be used where the rigid environmental requirements of solid-state detectors cannot be met. The inherent statistical fluctuations of the ionization processes involved determine the ultimate resolution of gas counters, and this is inferior to that of the Si(Li) detector. Since energy analysis in the low energy region is more difficult than in the region above 1 keV, the solid-state detector appears to be worth developing for operation over the entire energy range.
