Abstract
This article seeks to direct attention towards the need to educate the community to care for mentally handicapped people prior to the establishment of further community care systems. It is argued that mentally handicapped people living in the community are isolated in terms of both social contacts and occupation; and that certain assumptions are made, without supportive evidence, about the community's willingness to care. Keywords
