Abstract
Through the efforts of the National Geographic and the state alliances it created, there is a new geography being established in the schools. It is based on five geographic themes: location, place, relationships within places, movement, and regions. This article examines the new geography as geography and as a subject in the general education of American children, compares it with the old school geography that has fallen from favor, and recommends the establishment of a new joint NCGE-AAG standing committee to examine the new geography, monitor its progress, and make recommendations and modifications.
