Syntactic definition and parsing of molecular formulae: Part 1 Initial syntax definition and parser implementation

Abstract
A first level syntax specification for chemical formulae is presented and a simple algorithm which enables the parsing of such formulae is described. The algorithm may be usefully employed in the design of interactive software for computer-based learning and database query systems. Particular emphases is given to the use of a structured approach to the implementation of the parser.
