Abstract
Community Organization in Asia draws on the work of the Asian Committee for People's Organization to set out some lessons about how a community organizer should work. It describes the Asian Committee for People's Organization and its philosophy, and identifies the different steps in the process whereby a community organizer comes to work in low-income settlements with organizations formed by their inhabitants. The paper includes a summary of the Tagisan Statement produced by representatives from over 85 organizing groups in the Philippines in 1985. A final section draws on the author's 20 years working with community organizations to consider their strengths and the difficulties they face. Keywords
