The effect of national wheatmeal on the absorption of calcium

Abstract
Six men ate a diet containing a large proportion of bread (both wheatmeal bread of 85% extraction and "white" bread of 75% extraction) and a low amt. of Ca (about 0.55 g./day). Ca was detd. in food, feces, and urine. It was found that an avg. of 0.110 g. of Ca was lost daily on wheatmeal, and 0.023 g. daily on "white" flour regime. The results accord with those obtained by McCance and Widdowson (J. Physiol. 101: 42. 1942), and support the present British policy of adding Ca salts to national wheatmeal.
