Abstract
The scientific‐engineering curriculum—and hence the ethos of the technological society—portrays rhetoric as a set of specialized skills practiced by a trained elite. For both practical and theoretical reasons, it would be preferable to receive the classical view of rhetoric as simply the refinement of a native human capacity.Keywords
