THE SOURCE OF OESTRIN IN THE PREGNANT MARE

Abstract
A mare was ovariectomized at ca. the 200th day of pregnancy. Pregnancy, birth and lactation were normal. The estrin level in the urine determined at frequent intervals, fell a few days after operation, subsequently rose, and during the last 60 days of pregnancy was comparable to that of normal mares. Previously published data help to show that estrin was produced after the operation, and the conclusion is drawn that the maternal ovary is not ap-preciably concerned in the production of estrin during the last third of pregnancy. Other tissues which may be involved are the endometrium, fetal gonads, or fetal placenta; the authors offer evidence pointing to the fetal placenta.
