Some Effects of Steroids on Cleavage of Rabbit Eggsin Vitro

Abstract
The effects of steroids on mammalian ova were studied by culturing fertilized rabbit eggs in media containing different concentrations of 1 of 12 different steroids. Progesterone, as recorded earlier, inhibited cleavage at concentrations of 0.03 mid or higher. Testosterone propionate also inhibited cleavage but not so effectively as progesterone. At the same concentrations the estrogens caused ova to fragment. None of the other steroids tested showed any obvious effect on the eggs. These results are interpreted as effects related to the phospholipid layer of the cell membrane. (Endocrinology75: 706, 1964)
