Abstract
A general expression is derived for magnetic scattering of slow neutrons from oxygen gas which takes account of molecular rotation. The scattering derived on the basis of Meckler's ground electronic wave function for is discussed. The validity of the static or semiclassical approximation is considered. Values are given for the total magnetic cross section in laboratory coordinates based on Meckler's wave function. The magnetic scattering does not appear to be sufficiently sensitive to changes in the wave function to distinguish in practice between different reasonable approximate wave functions.
