Pancreatic Amylase Polymorphism: Another Example of a Distinctive Gene Frequency among Sardinians

Abstract
The distribution of electrophoretic patterns of pancreatic amylase (Amy) in 319 Sardinians and in 476 blood donors living in Naples were studied. The results obtained show a difference in the phenotype frequency of the Amy2 duplication variant between Sardinians (1.25%) and Neapolitans (5.25%) which is statistically significant (P < 0.01). This further confirms that Sardinians show peculiar ethnic chracteristics as compared to other Caucasian groups, even to those living in the Mediterranean area.
