Abstract
On November 18, 1846, the Boston Medical and Surgical Journal had the privilege of publishing the first detailed public announcement to the medical profession of Morton's demonstration of surgical anesthesia at the Massachusetts General Hospital on October 16 of the same year. The paper was written by Henry Jacob Bigelow, a Boston surgeon of twenty-eight, who had witnessed the first operation and the second, on October 17, and had forced the issue to disclose the nature of the new agent at the time of a third operation on November 9.
