SEGMENTAL DILATATION OF THE COLON

Abstract
Segmental dilatation of the colon is a rarely described disease in which a variable length and portion of the colon is greatly dilated. The muscular wall of this segment is hypertrophic and ganglion cells are present throughout the colon and rectum. These patients have constipation which may resemble that of Hirschsprung’s disease. The dilated segment, however, rather than the rectosigmoid colon should be resected.
