Nonuniqueness of Canonical Ensemble Theory arising from Microcanonical Basis
Abstract
Given a physical system, the counting rule for its statistical description is not unique, in general. It is shown that this nonuniqueness leads to the existence of various canonical ensemble theories arising from the definite microcanonical basis and correspondingly the maximum entropy principle is to be appropriately modified for each physical context. The result is also affirmed by the method of steepest descents. These features are illustrated by an example of a simple fractal system. Keywords
