Gastric Acid Secretion and Plasma Gastrin Levels in Dogs Treated with High Oral Doses of Ranitidine and Omeprazole

Abstract
It is well known that a low pH in the antrum inhibits the release of gastrin from antral G-cells (1). Therefore, an increase in plasma gastrin levels might be expected during periods of sustained inhibition of gastric acid secretion, because the normal inhibitory activity is withdrawn. As gastrin acts as a trophic hormone on the gastric corpus mucosa (2), an increase in DNA synthesis might be a reflection of the high plasma gastrin levels seen during such periods. This would stimulate the growth, and eventually lead to hypertrophy of the gastric mucosa.Keywords
