Abstract
The effect of foliage spray applns. of the fungicide Zerlate (zinc dimethyldithiocarbamate) on the free amino acids in sugar-beet leaves grown in a greenhouse was measured in a series of analyses involving total ninhydrin-reactants and a combination of 1- and 2-dimensional pa-per chromatography. Glutamic acid content decreased significantly with treatment, and glutamine increased. Valine and leucine also increased significantly. Tyrosine, undetected in controls, appeared faintly in treated samples. Apparently, treatment with Zerlate induces a metabolic shift wherein glutamic acid decreases in the leaves and accumulates in the roots of sugar-beet plants, as has been reported earlier. Keywords
